MetroCard Farewell
After years of making New Yorkers swipe, wait, and lose their patience, the MetroCard finally gets to say goodbye on its own terms.

METROCARD
So... this is retirement, huh? Smells like old pizza and regret. Classic.
TOKEN
Better than ending up in some forgotten box next to a dead phone charger.
METROCARD
Hey, at least people kept you. I got bent, lost, left in pockets, drowned in laundry, even used as bookmarks.
TOKEN
You always were dramatic.
METROCARD
Says the guy who became a keychain no one actually uses.
TOKEN
Touché.
A NYC rat wearing a tiny MTA vest skateboards by, salutes, and no one notices.
METROCARD
I miss the swipe. The ritual. That hopeful flick of the wrist. That crushing “Please Swipe Again.”
TOKEN
Me? Simple. Insert. Push. Clunk. The door opens.
METROCARD
You were a circle people made wishes on. Never worked but still.
A glowing OMNY reader floats by humming with robotic energy.
OMNY
You guys are still here? Retro much?
METROCARD
Shut up, WiFi coaster.
OMNY
I have tap-to-pay.
TOKEN
I have dignity.
OMNY glitches and floats away, offended but trying not to show it.
METROCARD
So what now? Do we just sit here? Forever?
TOKEN
Maybe. Or maybe we’re just the change that never made it home.
A ghost train rushes past. MetroCard and Token vanish into the wind like popcorn dust.
